Antifouling effect of bioactive compounds from marine sponge Acanthella elongata and different species of bacterial film on larval attachment of Balanus amphitrite (cirripedia, crustacea) BABT
Ganapiriya,Viswambaran; Maharajan,Athisuyambulingam; Kumarasamy,Pothiappan.
The antifouling activity of bioactive compounds from marine sponge Acanthella elongata (Dendy) and five species of bacterial biofilm were studied. Larvae of Balanus amphitrite (Cyprids and nauplii) were used to monitor the settlement inhibition and the extent to which inhibition was due to toxicity. The crude extract and partially purified fractions of A.elongata showed significant inhibition over the settlement individually, and with the interaction of bacterial species. No bacterial film stimulated the barnacle settlement. The high but variable levels of antifouling activity in combination with less amount of toxicity showed the potential of these metabolites in environmentally-friendly antifouling preparations.

Biofouling development and its effect on growth and reproduction of the farmed pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Lacoste, Elise; Le Moullac, Gilles; Levy, Peva; Gueguen, Yannick; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila.
In bivalve aquaculture, dominant fouling organisms are filter feeders which can compete for food with reared bivalves, sometimes causing mortality or reducing their growth rate. This study investigated the effect of biofouling on the farmed pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in two lagoons of French Polynesia. Survival, growth and reproduction of 2 year-old pearl oysters were monitored with regular sampling schedules, from the initial stage of colonization up to 20 months of biofouling accumulation. Control groups of pearl oysters were kept free of biofouling as is the current practice in pearl farms. After more than a year of monitoring, no significant difference was recorded in shell growth rate between pearl oysters reared with epibionts and the...

Chemical and microbiological evaluation of the internal surfaces of aluminum tubes both unlined and lined with epoxi resin by means of the stereoscope and scanning electron microscope BJM
Pizzolitto,Elisabeth Loshchagin; Pizzolitto,Antonio Carlos; Pozetti,Gilberto Luiz.
The internal surfaces of aluminum tubes, both unlined and lined with epoxy resin, which are used for packaged medicines such as creams, ointments, gels, etc., were evaluated chemically, and microbiologically with regard to microorganism adherence. Proof of porosity of the unlined aluminum surface and lined with epoxy resin, and the resistance to removal of the resin were observed using a scanning electron microscope and a stereoscope, with a digitalized image system. To evaluate the microorganisms adherence to the aluminum surface, unlined and lined with epoxy resin, sterilized disks (10mm in diameter) were immersed in Mueller Hinton Broth and placed in tubes of polypropylene with screw caps. The liquid culture medium was then inoculated with suspensions...

Composition of biofouling communities on suspended oyster cultures: an in situ study of their interactions with the water column ArchiMer
Mazouni, Nabila; Gaertner, J; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
This study was based on in situ experiments conducted in a shellfish lagoon (Thau, France) to determine the interactions between suspended oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg cultures and their environment at a seasonal scale. Three groups of descriptors were considered simultaneously during the course of the study: the taxonomic composition of an oyster culture unit (OCU), the nutrient and oxygen exchanges at the OCU-water interface (fluxes) and the water-column characteristics (water). We used a multiple factorial analysis (MFA) to assess in a single reference frame: (1) the seasonal organisation of the taxonomic groups which compose the OCU and (2) the interactions between this multispecific assemblage and the water column. We found strong seasonal...

Detection of introduced sessile species on the near shore continental shelf in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bumbeer,Janaína de Araújo; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
Invasion by marine species, often considered a grave threat to marine ecosystems, occurs throughout the world as a consequence of many anthropogenic activities. In coastal Paraná, many factors including shipping, aquaculture and the use of artificial substrates provide suitable environments for the establishment and rapid spread of introduced marine species. To better understand this process, the encrusting community was studied on polyethylene plates (n = 120, 10 x 10 cm) that were placed seasonally at fixed locations on the inner continental shelf to detect non-native species. Of the 62 taxa found, 40 were identified to species, 14 of which were native, 9 introduced and 17 cryptogenic. We found a new introduction while most introduced species were...

Distribution, associated species and extent of biofouling “reefs” formed by the alien species Ficopomatus enigmaticus (Annelida, Polychaeta) in marinas ArchiMer
Charles, M.; Faillettaz, Robin; Desroy, Nicolas; Fournier, Jerome; Costil, Katherine.
Artificial structures in ports are commonly colonized by non-indigenous epifauna that tolerate high pollution levels. Bioconstructions built by alien species may offer sheltered microhabitats for motile (vagile) animals but biofouling often becomes detrimental to human activities. In this context, the present study provides an inventory of 1) the extent of biofouling related to the alien Polychaeta Ficopomatus enigmaticus on hard structures of marinas in Normandy, France, and 2) the biodiversity of sessile (attached) or vagile (motile) fauna associated with these “reefs”, including both native and alien species. Reefs built by F. enigmaticus were found in 6 out of 12 marinas with oligohaline-mesohaline waters. Significant differences in the total volume of...

In situ measurement with diffusive gradients in thin films: effect of biofouling in freshwater ArchiMer
Uher, Emmanuelle; Compere, Chantal; Combe, Matthieu; Mazeas, Florence; Gourlay-france, Catherine.
Concerning in situ passive sampler deployment, several technical priorities must be considered. In particular, deployment time must be sufficiently long not only to allow a significant quantity to be accumulated to facilitate analysis but also to ensure that the signal is above the quantification limit and out of the blank influence. Moreover, regarding the diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique, deployment time must also be sufficiently long (at least 5 days) to avoid the interactions of the solutes with the material diffusion layer of the DGT and for the steady state to be reached in the gel. However, biofouling occurs in situ and modifies the surface of the samplers. In this article, we propose a kinetic model which highlights the biofouling...

Influence of farmed pearl oysters and associated biofouling communities on nutrient regeneration in lagoons of French Polynesia ArchiMer
Lacoste, Elise; Gueguen, Yannick; Le Moullac, Gilles; Koua, Manaarii Sham; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila.
Bivalve cultivation can significantly contribute to nutrient cycling in semi-enclosed ecosystems. We investigated the influence of suspended pearl oyster culture on nutrient regeneration in the water column of 3 oligotrophic lagoons in French Polynesia. The aim of this first study performed in a tropical area was to assess the seasonal variability of nutrient fluxes and to quantify the contribution of biofouling communities. In situ metabolic enclosure systems were used to measure nutrient uptake or release by ‘cultivation units’ (i.e. 4 pearl oysters with or without associated biofouling). In all 3 study lagoons (Tahiti, Mangareva, Ahe), nutrient fluxes produced by pearl oyster and associated biofouling communities (CR units) were 4- to 6-fold higher than...

Interactions des bactéries marines responsables de la formation des biosalissures avec des matériaux biospécifiques ArchiMer
Hamadouche, Nora.
The immersion of a material in a marine environment automatically results in forming a biological veil which develops into biofouling. Biofouling is responsible for many problems that occur on immerged structures. Marine bacteria are strongly involved in biofouling and specific studies are aiming at limiting their adhesion to the surface of immerged materials. The Laboratoire de Recherches sur les Macromolécules (Macromolecule Research Laboratory) has demonstrated that modulating or inhibiting human commensal bacteria with biospecific statistical copolymers is possible. The goal of our research has been to identify statistical copolymers capable of inhibiting marine bacteria adhesions and therefore reduce marine biofilm formation. In order to do so, two...

Introduced and cryptogenic species and their management in Paranaguá Bay, Brazil BABT
Neves,Carolina Somaio; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
The aim of this work was to identify the introduced and cryptogenic species in encrusting and associated communities of hard substrates in Paranaguá Bay, Brazil, and to attempt to determine which of these species could negatively affect the local community to suggest management strategies for these species. At least four introduced species were found - a large number in comparison with other port surveys. These were the hydrozoan Garveia franciscana Torrey, 1902, the polychaete Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1902, the barnacles Amphibalanus reticulatus (Utinoni, 1967) and Striatobalanus amaryllis Darwin, 1854, all with potentially harmful impacts. Of the 33 cryptogenic species, four were also listed in the literature as causing negative effects. We propose the...

Sanchez-rodriguez, Diana Elizabeth; Ortiz-aguirre, Ismael; Aguila-ramirez, Ruth Noemi; Guadalupe Rico-virgen, Erika; Gonzalez-acosta, Barbara; Hellio, Claire.
One way of reducing the input of pollutants into the marine environment is to enforce the use of non-toxic antifouling paints in marine protected areas. Thus, the purpose of this study was to detect marine microorganisms that secrete inhibitory substances against bacteria and microalgae to avoid biofouling on manmade structures in La Paz bay, B.C.S., Mexico. The inhibitory potential of 125 bacteria was evaluated against biofilm-forming bacteria. Crude extracts were obtained with methanol and ethyl acetate from 16 bacterial strains that exhibited antagonistic and antibacterial activity in a preliminary screening. Antibacterial and antimicroalgal assays were performed using crude extracts, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. The...

Natural antifouling compound production by microbes associated with marine macroorganisms: A review Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Satheesh,Sathianeson; Ba-akdah,Mohammad Abdulaziz; Al-Sofyani,Abdulmohsin A.
In the marine environment, all hard surfaces including marine macroorganims are colonized by microorganisms mainly from the surrounding environment. The microorganisms associated with marine macroorganisms offer tremendous potential for exploitation of bioactive metabolites. Biofouling is a continuous problem in marine sectors which needs huge economy for control and cleaning processes. Biotechnological way for searching natural product antifouling compounds gained momentum in recent years because of the environmental pollution associated with the use of toxic chemicals to control biofouling. While, natural product based antifoulants from marine organisms particularly sponges and corals attained significance due to their activities in field assays,...

Hulot, V.; Saulnier, Denis; Latchere, O.; Maihota, N.; Gaertner-mazouni, N..
The purpose of our study is to investigate (1) the influence of phenotype plasticity and local adaptation on pearl-oyster physiology by testing the persistence of growth differentiation of two pearl oyster populations (Arutua and Mangareva) in common garden experiment; (2) to quantify the influence of biofouling development on the growth of each pearl oyster population. According to our observations, the growth rate in terms of total oyster weight suggested better growth performance of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in Mangareva (0.21–0.24 ± 0.01 g.day−1) than Arutua (0.14–0.15 ± 0.01 g.day−1). However, similar growth performances are observed at the Vairao common garden site for oyster stocks from Mangareva (0.07 ± 0.01 mm.day−1 or...

Quorum sensing inhibitors from Leucetta chagosensis Dendy, 1863 ArchiMer
Mai, T.; Tintillier, Florent; Lucasson, Aude; Moriou, C.; Bonno, E.; Petek, S.; Magre, Kevin; Al Mourabit, A.; Saulnier, Denis; Debitus, C..
Sponges are a rich source for investigation of bioactive small molecules. They have been mostly investigated for the search of new pharmacological models or therapeutic agents for the treatment of human diseases. Micro-organisms can also represent a virulent pathogen for marine invertebrates such as sponges, which need to protect themselves against these microbes. Sponges' self defence mechanisms involving dialogue molecules thus represent a pertinent research track for potent anti-infective and anti-biofilm activities such as quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs). The investigation of the QSI crude extract of Leucetta chagosensis Dendy, 1863 led to the isolation of three new alkaloids, isonaamine D, di-isonaamidine A and leucettamine D, along with the known...

Freites,Luis Felipe; Guevara,Miguel; Márquez,Adrián; Revilla,Jormil; Narváez,Mariela; Lodeiros,César.
ABSTRACT We studied the influence of environmental variables associated with three water depths (2, 6 and 10 m) on shell growth, soft tissues dry mass (STDM) and survival of the Caribbean winged oyster Pteria colymbus (Roding, 1798). chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), dissolved oxygen, particulate organic matter (POM) and temperature were studied at each depth. Oysters were placed in 135 plastic baskets with five individuals in each basket. Three baskets at each depth were chosen at monthly intervals for measurements of biometric parameters, biofouling, and survival. At the end of the study, dry mass of the individuals grown at 10 m was significantly lower (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test KW, P < 0.05) with the highest values of STDM corresponding to oysters...
